Jim Stewart from Stewart Media (www.stewart.biz) provides a dangerous (for him) but helpful tip on domain name selection in his "on the road" video blog (yes, he's actually driving). He endorses the use of hyphens in the domain name which is not seen as problematic (though hyphens in the rest od the URL is). All that I have to say is "JIM, KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD!"
